DUI Evaluation & Treatment Overview

Colorado law requires individuals convicted of DUI (Driving Under the Influence) or DWAI (Driving While Ability Impaired) to complete an alcohol/drug evaluation and any recommended treatment. West Slope Casa coordinates DUI program services through our network of approved providers across the Western Slope.

The DUI Process

  1. Evaluation: Following a DUI conviction, you must complete an evaluation with a state-approved evaluator who will assess your alcohol and drug use history and recommend an appropriate level of treatment.
  2. Treatment Assignment: Based on the evaluation, you'll be assigned to one of four treatment levels, each with specific hour requirements.
  3. Treatment Completion: Complete all required treatment hours at an approved treatment agency within the timeframe specified.
  4. Documentation: Upon completion, your treatment provider will submit completion documents to the appropriate authorities.

Treatment Levels

Colorado's DUI treatment system uses four levels based on the severity of the substance use assessment:

Level I Education

12 hours of alcohol/drug education for first-time offenders with no identified substance abuse problem. Focuses on awareness and prevention of future incidents.

Level II Early Intervention

24 hours of education and therapy for those showing early signs of problematic use. Combines education with therapeutic intervention.

Level II+ Enhanced Therapy

52+ hours of treatment for repeat offenders or those with higher severity. Includes individual and group therapy components.

Level IV Intensive Treatment

86+ hours of intensive treatment for those with significant substance dependence. May include intensive outpatient or residential treatment.
